Following on from our recent #Blog on “Celebrity First Dances” we are delighted to share invaluable Top Tips from our elite partner Limerick DJ,Paul Prenderville on “Choosing The Right Song For Your First Dance”.

Choosing a first dance song seems like it should be one of the easiest wedding-planning decisions. But once couples realise how many great options are out there, the pressure can start to mount. After all, whichever song you pick will be the one that you define as “yours” for the rest of your lives together. It’s the one song you will always remember from your Wedding Day.…your-first-dance/ ‎

One easy way to do this is to choose the very first song you danced to with your fiancé. It could be the song that was playing in the restaurant when you first went out for dinner, or that song that was top of the charts, always on the radio when you were texting or emailing each other. It could literally be anything. Of course you’re going to want to pick one that’s at least a little bit romantic. It doesn’t have to be though, this is your choice.

But, what do you do when you don’t have a song that you call yours? Here’s where individual tastes can come in to play. Remember this is the song that you will remember forever. You’ve got to love the song. It could simply be you or your fiancé’s favourite song, but ensure you both love it. You don’t want to hear the song 5 years down the line and hate it. I promise you that won’t happen anyway!…your-first-dance/ ‎

There is no rule that says your first dance has to be slow, so why are most first dance songs slow? Simple answer, it’s romantic, and easy to dance to. I’ve met hundreds of couples who all pick slow songs and I always ask why that song? “We love it, It’s our song, it’s my finacé’s favourite” All very valid and great reasons for choosing a song.

But what if you want something that’s maybe a little bit more upbeat, that’s a bit different. Don’t be afraid. I say go for it. The more different the song is, the more people will remember it. I bet you can’t name three slow first dance songs that were played at weddings you attended. I am, however, certain you can remember the songs and dances that were a bit different. If that’s what you want at your wedding then do it. This is the one day where you get to decide everything, make the most of it and have fun with it too.…your-first-dance/ ‎

We’ve all seen the videos on youtube of songs mashed up and played together as a first dance. I’ve arranged this for many couples and they get a great reaction from guests at weddings. This though takes a lot of planning. Firstly you’ve got to get someone to put all the songs together for you (most DJs should be able to arrange this) and then you’ve got to come up with a dance routine and practice it, over and over and over again. Some couples involve the whole bridal party so planning is key if you are going down this road. If you’re going to do it, do it right.…your-first-dance/ ‎

So let’s pick some of the most popular first dance songs:

Ed Sheeran – Thinking out Loud

Jason Mraz – I’m Yours

Snow Patrol – Chasing Cars

Elbow – One Day Like this

Classic First Dance Songs

Etta James – At Last

Eva Cassidy – Songbird

Lionel Richie – Endless Love

Louis Armstrong – Wonderful World

More upbeat first dance songs:

Huey Lewis & the News – Power of Love

Al Green – Let’s Stay Together

Barry White – The First My Last My Everything

Starship – Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now

Remember, when choosing a first dance song make sure you both love the song. You will never forget your first dance and this is the song that will be “yours” forever!
